Welcome to the East Kootenay Road Safety Committee! We are a dedicated group of concerned drivers committed to creating safer highways in our beautiful region of British Columbia. Together, we collaborate with local authorities, including the RCMP, Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MOTi), Main Roads, bus drivers, wildlife organizations, and business owners to bring positive changes to our roads.
Our mission includes advocating for the installation of more cameras in vehicles, which will facilitate accurate reporting of accidents and near misses. This initiative will provide valuable data to help improve road safety.
We are also actively working with the Minister of Transportation to install new signage in hazardous areas, ensuring that drivers are well-informed about potential dangers. Additionally, we aim to establish a transparent ticketing system between provinces, promoting accountability and safer driving practices.
To further enhance road safety, we are developing an information campaign to educate drivers about the unique conditions in the East Kootenay region. As our community welcomes newcomers from around the world, it’s essential to address the challenges posed by varying driving habits, such as inappropriate driving techniques for our multi-lane highways or a lack of understanding regarding proper winter tires. Moreover, we aim to raise awareness about the hazards associated with wildlife migration, particularly during the Koocanusa migration season.
